Shakuntala Devi passes away in Bangalore on Sunday

The legendary Shakuntala Devi, world’s fastest Human computer whose skills in mathematics earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records is no more.

Shakuntala Devi died of respiratory complications at a Bangalore hospital. It is remarkable that she had no formal education and picked up reading and writing from books. It is said that adding two 16 digit numbers and multiplying the result with another 16 digit number was done almost instantaneously. Then within the blink of the eye she would tell the cube root of the resultant.

The mathematics demonstration expert attributed her powers to divinity. Univac 1108 one of the fastest computers ever made rated her as one in 58 million for the way she computed without any other devices.

Shakuntala Devi was born in an orthodox Kannada Brahmin family on Nov 4 1929. She has written a lot of books. Astrology for you, Fun with Numbers and Puzzles to Puzzle you are some of the well known ones.

Higgs Boson getting renamed

Ever since the significance of the God particle, the Higgs Boson caught the fancy of the common man there has been a stir among the scientific community regarding the naming of the particle.

Peter Higgs is only one of the six scientists who put out papers regarding the elusive God particle. The others are Carl Hagen, Tom Kibble and Guralnik who published findings on the God particle just weeks after Higgs and Francois Englert and Robert Brout whose papers came out before Higgs paper did.

There are suggestions afoot to name the particle as BEHGHK or the Berk particle with the initials of all the contributing scientists being included in the name.

However, other scientists are not concerned. They contend that a name that has been around for 40 or so years need not be changed.

Movie Review Priyadarshan and Rangrezz

The director Priyadarshan wants the movie to follow certain guidelines of yesteryears, the fisticuffs and the emotional appeal reflecting scenes that would have looked good a decade back. The story of three friends (with Jackky Bhagnani, Priya Anand and Rajpal Yadav playing the roles) who pitch in to get two estranged lovers married is nothing new.

The way the lovebirds part ways making the friends look silly may be the turning of the story but it is not. The friends bring the couple together and leave them alone far away in the hope that they would re unite.

Some hope, the turning point in the story is when the hero is faced with the same situation at the end of the story. Jackky Bhagnani, Priya Anand and Rajpal Yadav are in the lead roles.

SO WHAT ARE THEY SAYING MONKEY MAN COMMUNICATIVE LINK FOUND

The wild gelada baboon in Ethiopia has been “smacking” its lips and making sounds just like human speech, scientists report. The chattering of monkeys and human speech has long been analyzed side by side for any clues to the evolution of language.

So what was the need that made evolution of sound into language? It is believed the need to communicate is felt when large groups of primates are gathered together. The chatter then takes on the sorts of human forms that we today recognize as language.

Wild gelada baboon or monkey from the forests of the Himalayas, they are driven by the same passion; they want to get the females. Perhaps that is why man also talks maybe.

Wonder what shuts him up?

Magnificent though subdued.

The beginning of the week was a bit dull, the opening notes just did not seem to take off. There was a flash of inspired instrumenting when I wrote and submitted my articles but that was lost in the overall profusion of sound emanating from the string section (they are the keepers). The rhythm overall was merry and I got everything in good perspective though the things I wanted done, like the clothes, did not rise up to the washing line. There was overall harmony in the kitchen department, with everyone contributing their piece and though there were burns out and rehashes the synchrony was maintained.

Not a bad piece, though the conductor would have felt bad that I did not drop in to visit Him this week. I have full confidence that the performance next week will be even better.
